Why the Nickname “Jin Yong”?
- Pen Name Origin: The name “Jin Yong” comes from splitting his real surname 查 (Cha) into two parts—“金” (Jin, meaning “gold”) and “庸” (Yong, meaning “common” or “ordinary”).

Interestingly, his grandfather was a Jinshi (scholar) during the Qing 清 dynasty so in a way he inherited his creative writing DNA from his ancestors.
Early Life & Education
- Born on 6 February, 1924, in Haining, Zhejiang, China, Cha came from an educated family with a strong literary background.
- He studied international law at Soochow University but had to suspend his education due to the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945).
- Later, he moved to Chongqing and worked briefly as a newspaper proofreader.
First Steps in Journalism & Writing
- In 1946, Cha joined Ta Kung Pao (大公报), a major Hong Kong newspaper, as an international news translator and editor.
- In 1948, he was transferred to Hong Kong, where he continued working for Ta Kung Pao and later its sister paper, New Evening Post (新晚报).
The Birth of “Jin Yong” – His First Wuxia Novel
- In 1955, while working at New Evening Post, his colleague Chen Wentong (梁羽生), another famous wuxia writer (pen name: Liang Yusheng), was writing serialized martial arts stories.
- When Liang took a break, the newspaper needed a replacement, and Cha was encouraged to try writing a wuxia novel.
- His debut novel, 《书剑恩仇录》 (“The Book and the Sword”), was published under the pen name “Jin Yong” and became an instant hit.
Founding His Own Newspaper & Serializing Novels
- In 1959, Cha co-founded 《明报》 (Ming Pao), a Hong Kong newspaper, where he served as editor-in-chief.
- To boost readership, he serialized his own wuxia novels in Ming Pao, including:
- 《神雕侠侣》 (“The Return of the Condor Heroes”)
- 《倚天屠龙记》 (“The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber”)
- 《天龙八部》 (“Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils”)
- His novels were so popular that they drove newspaper sales, cementing his reputation as a literary giant.
Transition to Full-Time Writing & Legacy
- By the 1960s–70s, Jin Yong had completed 15 wuxia novels, revising them multiple times for later editions.
- He retired from writing in 1972 but remained influential as a publisher, commentator, and cultural figure until his passing in 2018.
Key Takeaway
Jin Yong started as a journalist and only began writing wuxia fiction by chance. His deep knowledge of Chinese history, philosophy, and martial arts—combined with his storytelling genius—turned him into the most beloved wuxia author of all time.
But did his Bazi reflected this and let’s delve into what does his BaZi reveal?
BaZi Character Profiling
Yi 乙 person especially with Mao supported by Mao 卯, Bing 丙 and Zi 子 gives him the extreme creative and intuitive abilities. He would be a intuitive in nature. His Bazi also suggest that he is more towards the emotional side of things which allows him to go into deep imaginative state.
Thus, story book writing is something that he can use to stand out among others. Still, he will not fair well as a reporter. Why?. From his profiling, we can see that he is not an aggressive person when it comes to actions but rather he is more of a mental person.
Destiny Reading
Why he is capable of achieving such success in his work that is not only great but leaving a legacy in this world. His works were not only published in many different languages but also made into movies.
He also has award the OBE by Queen that carries the title Sir and the Grand Bauhinia Medal the highest honour in Hong Kong. (Honor and Fame but lacks Officer in his chart)
This is because he has the useful god of Bing 丙 and supported by Jia 甲 that became his fan base.
His net worth was once estimated to be around HKD600 million esp after he sold his stake holding shares in 1993. (He only had Xu as wealth in his Bazi, is already for him to amass such a wealth)
He found his talent early in life and as he worked hard in this direction, destiny will slowly unfold for him. You may also say that it was destiny who showed him his talent in the early days and was quickly discovered by his headmaster who later transferred him another school for a better future. (Nobleman)
All these would not have been possible if his Bazi is void of Useful God. If you are learning only the 10 Gods, it is normal you can’t read Bazi well.
Politics
He entered politics briefly but left soon after. He was given the responsibility to help draft the Hong Kong Basic Law but resigned in protest of the Tienanmen Square incident. Later he oversaw the transition of Hong Kong back to China.
The Yin 寅 gave him the righteous character but his Bing 丙 gave him the ability to see the bigger picture of things which is essential as a law maker.
Marriage
Louis Cha has three wives during his lifetime and as some of you know, wife element is the earth element but he only has one Wu 戊 in the Xu 戌 (dog) in the Ten Gods. Coupled by the Zi 子 (rat) this gives him a unique attraction energy. Where is the missing link? There is something beyond the 10 Gods.
Useful God
Without useful god in your Bazi, life is at best average. In Bazi reading, catching the useful god is the most important yet majority of the “masters” do not have this ability. They have to top it up using their, perhaps gifted spiritual abilities or using divination tools like Yi Jing or Qi Men to supplement their accuracy.
It is very difficult to understand one’s character if you just read them purely on Ten Gods while excluding the Useful God.
Even for one to be a celebrity master, your Bazi needs Useful God too. What fighting heaven’s will using Feng shui and what lot is just a story telling marketing campaign. I bet you have never seen their Bazi that is backed by evidence. Even if they show you, you may not know how to read too…
Useful God is so important as it can bring you wealth, fame, happiness, success etc. Many good things that the 10 Gods is missing.
Thus if you seriously like to improve your Bazi reading skills, you just have to learn the Nature’s Way of Bazi to begin your first step towards correct way of Bazi.
